“International Portrait Day: Tribute to My Grandparents Through Photography”

Jun 23, 2024 | Documentary, Family Portraiture, Location Photographic Session, Personal, Portrait

Today, in celebration of International Portrait Day, I am thrilled to share a series of photographs from one of my first-ever portrait shoots. This series is particularly special to me, as it was part of my B.A. Hons Degree in Photography. During this shoot, I had the incredible opportunity to photograph my beloved grandparents, Beat and Fred.

A Trip Down Memory Lane

These images hold a deep personal significance for me. My grandparents, Beat and Fred, were a constant source of love and wisdom in my life. The name “Beat and Fred” might sound unusual to some, but it’s a fond childhood nickname my older sister gave them, and it stuck. Capturing their essence through my lens was an experience I cherish dearly.

The Freedom of Intuition

Looking back at these photographs, I am reminded of the freedom I felt as a budding photographer. I was unaware of the “rules” that often come with formal training and instead worked purely on intuition. This freedom allowed me to capture the true essence of my grandparents’ personalities and the intimate environment they lived in. The results, I believe, speak for themselves.

A Moment in Time

As time has passed and my grandparents are no longer with us, these images have grown in value. They serve as a unique time capsule, preserving not only the memories of Beat and Fred but also a way of life that has changed significantly over the years. I believe these photographs hold historical and social importance, offering a glimpse into a different era.

The Importance of Portraits

On this International Portrait Day, I strongly urge everyone to take a moment to capture portraits of those who are important to them. Whether you use a professional camera or a smartphone, the act of capturing a moment in time is invaluable. These images will become treasured memories, offering comfort and joy in the future.

Get Out and Capture

So, grab your camera or phone and take a portrait of someone dear to you today. Print it, cherish it, and remember the love and connection it represents. One day, it will be a priceless treasure.

I hope you enjoy these images as much as I do and take a moment to remember those you hold dear. Much love,
